In September 2018 I quit my full time job to become 100% freelancer as a Photographer and (licensed) Tour Leader. As a freelancer I don’t have a photo studio or a shop, but I move around all the time and rely on my portable photography studio.
Clients call and I am ready to go with just a few accessories that make a lot of difference. Natural light is always a friend but sometimes you need to shoot at night, indoors or in hard light conditions so a portable photography studio will make everything easier.
I didn’t invest a huge amount of money for this equipment and I am already happy with the results. Of course there is always space for new gadgets and accessories but so far I’m more than satisfied (and so are my clients).

What I do with my Portable Photography Studio
As you know I work a lot abroad and online, but when I’m home I like to work offline with local businesses. It’s a great way to explore my region – which I neglect too much – and to meet new people. Also, with my experience in hotels, I gladly take photos of properties for their OTA pages and websites, although this doesn’t really require the portable photo studio. The same goes for real estate photography which I do a lot. But this is another story!
I mainly use my portable photography studio for:
- Food photography
- Portraits and passport photos
- Commercial photography in general (for example, photos of items to sell online and for websites)
My equipment
I have a few but very important items in my portable photography studio. Here they are:
The Light Box
The real star of my portable photography studio equipment is the light box. With this single item I can shoot any object I want with great lighting! The only limit is the size. For bigger items I use other things that I will talk about in a minute.
As Light Box, I use the Amzdeal 50×50 0ne (also available in different sizes).
Check out some of my food photography shot with the light box. What do you think about it? Well, my client was very happy with it!
Here, I used the white background but this light box comes with 3 different backgrounds – white, black and peach pink. The kit can be disassembled and stored in its pouch when not needed. This helps saving space and of course carrying it around.
The SOFTBOX
When shooting indoors you need to control the light. A softbox (or two) will simulate the sun light (window light) and reduce harsh shadows. I use this a lot for indoor portraits and it never disappoints! I use the GEEKOTO Softbox Kit which includes two softboxes for better results against harsh shadows. Also, this works great for video shooting. Once you are done you can disassemble the kit which will easily go back into its pouch.
The Reflector
The Neewer 10000076 reflector kit will help you while shooting outdoors. Portraits, fashion shootings, you name it: with this kit you can manipulate the light and make it colder, warmer, weaker etc. and also avoid harsh shadows on the face which can easily ruin outside portraits.
The Neewer 10000076 reflector kit is a very inexpensive item that will improve your outdoors photography and easily so. This can also be folded and put into its pouch for transportation.

The wishlist
This is the wishlist, meaning I will buy the following items soon. I’ve been asked to take photos for very large items so this is what I will need (together with the softboxes I mentioned above, which I already have):
A large, white background
I have had the Neewer 2,8×4,6m white background in my Amazon cart for a while. Will buy it as soon as the job I mentioned above is confirmed. This can be used for so many different purposes! And there is a wide choice of colours.
Together with the white background I will purchase a Neewer 2,6x3m holder.
Bottom Line
As you can see none of the above mentioned items are super expensive. On the contrary everything I mentioned is super affordable for anyone. As I don’t have a studio – yet – and I carry all of this stuff around all the time, up and down the car, and I have to assemble and disassemble everything multiple times, of course things can get damaged. I don’t want to buy super expensive gear and ruin it. Also I guarantee these things work great! I wouldn’t be using them otherwise.
All of these items are easy to carry around and come with bags or pouches to store and easily transport them.
You can be a photographer on the go with this Portable Photography Studio!
